Jason McKee Turns Personal Heartbreak Into Lasting Beauty on Love Keeps Burning Still Song

Jason McKee never disguises the emotional truth behind Reetoxa, and "Love Keeps Burning Still" stands as one of the project's most intimate achievements. Positioned as the emotional centerpiece of an ambitious forthcoming double album, the single draws directly from McKee's own life, revisiting the collapse of a decade-long relationship with remarkable honesty. Rather than dramatizing heartbreak, the song quietly accepts it, transforming painful memories into something compassionate, reflective, and deeply human.

The story behind Love Keeps Burning Still gives the music even greater significance. McKee met Lee during Munich's Oktoberfest in 2003 before the couple married between 2011 and 2016. Ironically, the artistic ambition that ultimately defined Reetoxa also contributed to the relationship's end. Instead of revisiting those memories with bitterness, McKee writes with maturity, acknowledging how love can leave lasting marks long after people move in different directions.

Written during Melbourne's COVID lockdown, the song emerged from an extraordinarily intense creative period when McKee was reportedly writing as many as ten songs each day. That relentless pace eventually took a severe personal toll, leading to six weeks in hospital. Knowing that history adds another emotional layer to the performance. Love Keeps Burning Still is not simply about romantic loss but about surviving emotional exhaustion while refusing to abandon creativity.

Producer Simon Moro surrounds McKee's vulnerable songwriting with elegant restraint. Terry Hart's expressive piano provides the emotional foundation before the Budapest string orchestra gradually expands the arrangement into something cinematic without overwhelming its intimacy. Coordinating orchestral sessions through Zoom was an unusually bold decision for an independent Australian artist, yet the result feels remarkably cohesive and natural. Every orchestral swell strengthens the emotional narrative instead of distracting from it.

The supporting musicians further elevate the recording. Kit Riley delivers warm, understated bass work, Peter Marin keeps the rhythm grounded with tasteful precision, James Ryan contributes subtle guitar textures, while Jessica McPherson-Riley's duet vocals introduce warmth and balance that deepen the conversation unfolding between the lead voices.

What makes Love Keeps Burning Still resonate most is its refusal to chase melodrama. It recognises that some relationships never completely disappear because they continue shaping who we become. McKee embraces that reality with sincerity, allowing reflection to replace regret.
