Powers of the Monk Unleashes Haunting New Single Bread & Circuses

Detroit duo Powers of the Monk is back and has one of their most bold and surreal releases in Bread and Circuses. The essence of the song draws directly from the fragmented thoughts of a person diagnosed with schizophrenia and depicts a dark dream narrative of escaping from confinement, getting lost in a freak show that ends with circus lions eating clowns. While it is certainly an unsettling story, the duo depicts it with artistic display and raw authenticity, highlighting their blend of odd storytelling with immersive soundscapes.

Breadd and Circuses features eerie guitars, ghostly keys, and ethereal violin textures by CasSondra “Pontiac” Powers. David S. Monk’s vocals deliver the story with ferocity, pulling the listener into the lost and distorted mindset of the story’s protagonist. Guest drummer John O’Reilly Jr. further compounds the dynamism of the track, adding rhythmic driving power and bringing some semblance of organization to the off-balance theme narrative.

The song is not merely experimental; it is also challenging. The band, Powers of the Monk, addresses mental illness with colorful images that perhaps make the listener a bit uncomfortable, yet they still find a way to produce art that is an escape.

This is another step forward for the band, continuing the momentum after Switchin’ Rails and Strip the Bone; the originality of the band remains intact. With Bread & Circuses, Powers of the Monk was showing a brand of art that only a true artist does in confronting stories that others may shy away from.
