Kristin Grayden Unleash Dark and Daring New Single Murder + Gravestone
Emerging Perth artist Kristin Grayden's new record, Murder + Gravestone, takes her voice in new bold directions/into the territory of the unknown. This two-part single allows her to demonstrate not only her creativity in that playfulness but also to marry it with darker experimental sounds. Elsewhere in her catalog, Grayden has shared other light-hearted moments, wrapped with a bow, but here she goes in a different direction, combining rock-infused intensity with lyrics that balance a horror/core-inspired premise with emotional rawness.
The first half of the single, Murder, leans heavily into the territory of camp horror bathed in obvious references to cult classics such as The Exorcist or A Nightmare on Elm Street. The twisted but fun approach to the lyrics lends itself to listeners who crave music that does not take itself too seriously, whilst still being edged just enough into the recognizable narrative. I like that the shorter nature of the single felt intentional, as a burst of adrenaline that leaves you urgently wanting more.
Conversely, Gravestone took a deep dive into vulnerability. Addressing themes of love lost before being able to accept love again, the chorus, "I'll come back to this spot when I'm ready to love again," resonated with haunting nostalgia. The track positions Grayden as a songwriter who can marry huge production intensity alongside serious, poignant storytelling.
With Murder + Gravestone, Kristin Grayden proves she’s more than just a newcomer to pop; she’s a developing artist who isn’t afraid to get duller and more exploratory with her sound.
