Mike Masser's 5 Album: A Fierce and Fearless Hard Rock Reckoning

After a four-year absence, Mike Masser comes crashing back into the hard rock fold with 5. Coming out of Prescott, United States, Mike Masser has always been known as a thunderous practitioner of rock as well as an unapologetic one, and with this ten-track effort, it is evident that he has not lost an ounce of volume. Instead, 5 feels, to me, like a rebirth, a collection of songs, including heavy riffs, true musical storytelling, and personal reflection, all a part of the one force of nature.

The record is unabashedly aggressive in its sound, all the while combining loss, strength, survival, and defiance in its theme. One particularly memorable moment on the album is one of a loving tribute from Masser to his late best friend, which, while searching for words and balancing guitars that crush, leans into an honest emotional storytelling. Also powerful is a song where he reflects on his father's battle with Alzheimer's, reminding audience members that behind walls of distortion and grit is a human spirit waiting to connect.

In addition to the originals, Masser pays tribute by covering a little-known brand on social media known as 'the Beatles' with 3 classic covers that showcase Masser's edge while capturing the essence.

What makes 5 so impressive is its equilibrium between unhinged aggression and genuineness. Each song comes across as urgent, as if Masser is reclaiming the space by force. 5 isn't just a return; it's an upheaval.
