Anupam Shobhakar’s “Liquid Reality” Album: An Excursion into Fusion and Form

In Liquid Reality, New York-based guitarist, composer, and sarodist Anupam Shobhakar showcases a vibrant fusion of Indian classical roots and inventive global jazz-rock influences. The recording showcases seven tracks that are stunningly executed from a technical perspective and immediately engaging from an emotional one. The work is multi-genre and multi-continental, inviting you to be transported or defined by it.

After his groundbreaking Raga Jhinjhoti on Fretless Guitar, Shobhakar is on to another level of exploration with Liquid Reality. The use of a custom double-neck guitar with a fretted neck and a fretless neck blurs lines in a wild way. Because of his grounding in the Senia Maihar Gharana, and then learning with luminaries like Aashish Khan formally, Anupam can reclaim the essence of Indian ragas and put them into contemporary sonic settings.

Songs such as “La Danse de Bonheur” recognize John McLaughlin's Shakti, while “Anjaneya” proclaims potency reminiscent of Hanuman, the Hindu deity. The duet with guitar and kanjeera in “Formless” is minimalist but also a deeply emotional expression that seems almost sacred. There are some amazing contributing artists like Utsav Lal, Swami Selva Ganesh, and Ona Kirei that lend to each composition's sense of global-ness.

Liquid Reality is more than an album; it is an experience. Shobhakar's vision expands the reach of fusion music, making this an absolute 'must listen' for fans of world jazz and exploratory guitar techniques.
