“Copium” by Bloomfield Machine: A Dreamy, Experimental Exploration into the Subconscious Album

Bloomfield Machine's Copium is a fascinating journey through texture, tonality, and emotional nuance. Copium, the 17-track release put together by Huntington Beach-based multi-instrumentalist Brian Kassan, is a wonderful blend of ambient, glitch, classic rock, and electronic minimalism. Copium showcases an altogether softer, more self-analytical expression of Kassan's creative universe, a distinct departure from the darker sonic palette of his older work.

The album occupies an area of tone that is balanced between melancholy and hope, heard in ambient track highlights like "Diminishing Returns" and "Trading Happiness", where the ambient simple-ness adds complexity to the emotional landscape.

In Copium, Kassan maintains his richness in melodic hookiness, but has drawn them, so to speak, into a haze rather than bright light. Copium was built with Reason DAW, explored and documented through a myriad of analog and digital textures, with all the recording done in Kassan's apartment, giving the project an intimate and rugged feel.

Each selection on Copium floats through the listener like a stray shortwave transmission from their subconscious-never does it outstay its welcome. The record flows beautifully, an often simple document, that encourages small details to be discovered on repeat listens, especially listening on headfones. In Copium, Bloomfield Machine reinvents introspective electronica, providing both a relaxing and contemplative getaway.
