“Gravity Sessions,” by Rosetta West: A Raw & Reverent Homecoming Album

Rosetta West’s Gravity Sessions is a spirited homage to raw authenticity. Recorded live at the venerable Gravity Studios of Chicago, IL, with producer Doug McBride, the album is a collection of seven tracks that bring together a seasoned blues-rock trio in a time capsule of genuine rawness, soul, and spiritual essence. Fans of Rosetta West are sure to reconnect with and appreciate some old favorites in these clear, uncluttered cuts, while newcomers will find themselves entranced by the emotional immediacy and musical devotion of this record.

Kicking off with "Dora Lee," the album immediately puts forth an ethos of live-recording, little to no polish, just presence. Joseph Demagore’s vocals are part mysticism and part rough edge; his guitar blends vintage blues with psychedelic flair.  Bassist Herf Guderian and drummer Mike Weaver (‘seasoned’ isn’t a strong enough word to convey their musical pedigree with Rosetta West) are locked in solid, flowing, formatted rhythmic grounding. Every rhythm, sound, melody, and emotion is tied together with a marvelous tightness.

The highlight track “Suzie” is a prime example of what Gravity Sessions can produce, familiar themes reinvented without a curated sound. The blend of blues, holes, and spirituality of Rosetta West is unchanged; however, gifting their catalog with a precious moment from the studio emphasizes the slightly higher tendency arrived from the live recording.

Gravity Sessions is more than a rework; it solidifies Rosetta West's position in indie blues rock. It's authentic, raw, and soulful, reminding us of why live music is important.
