L¥AN Unveils MEMENTO MORI: A Dark, Emotional Journey Through Psychedelic Soundscapes Album
From Esbjerg, Denmark, L¥AN has arrived with a remarkable debut full-length album, MEMENTO MORI. More than just a collection of songs, this ten-track project functions as the conceptual soundtrack to a Psychedelic Horror Book, written by L¥AN; it combines eerie storytelling with raw sound experimentation to result in an intensely personal and brave work on life and death, trauma and rebirth.
The title Memento Mori, a reflection of human mortality, provides the underlying theme for the album's entire atmosphere. As the album progresses, L¥AN takes the audience on an absurd ride based on the ghostly legacy of the prior owner/inhabitant of Hesbjerg Castle in Denmark. While this may seem fictitious to some, it holds emotional significance to L¥AN. Though the story may appear fictional, the character is ultimately a reflection of L¥AN choosing to voice themes of love, loss, despair, and ultimately self-destructive habits. Disturbingly, the story doesn't feel fictional but like an extension of L¥AN's own struggles with bullying, anxiety, and ultimately wanting mental health and healing.
The album is inspired by a wide variety of artists such as Quadeca, Kanye West, SZA, and Bon Iver, which gives it a fluid blend of cinematic atmosphere and cutting-edge hip-hop experimentation. “BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS” exemplifies this equilibrium by including psychedelic textures and haunting screams to summon both the allure of death and personal trauma's heft. Conversely, “REACH ACROSS THE SKY” embodies an optimistic foil as it acknowledges the fear of dying before one attempts to rendezvous with their dreams. Together, both tracks provide a foundation for the album's emotional core.
MEMENTO MORI is uniquely recorded in the intimate confines of L¥AN's apartment and on limited gear. It is a project that achieves the DIY ethos by fully relying upon vision and determination. After two years of writing, deleting, and finally compiling, L¥AN produced a work that is both intentional and cohesive. L¥AN even sampled outside sounds like vinyl crackles, bird chirps, and sounds from a nostalgic phase of their childhood playing NES video games, to add texture and meaning.
