Klarstein.rocks EP "Demos '96": Brings Back a Fossilized Chunk of Raw 90s Ecology.

Klarstein.rocks is a Freiburg-based band, and their latest release, "Demos '96", is a literal time capsule of sound from the last three decades. This collection of three tracks was recorded in 1996 on a small cassette player and captures a raw moment of a group of friends discovering their voice. "Demos '96" brings those tracks into the present as they were remastered by Barbonus. This time capsule holds space for missteps along with all the raw energy experienced by the band in their early years.

The first track "Ling Lu" is a warm guitar-driven track with an unpolished edge; it is reminiscent of the 70s European Pop sound and 90s indie raw energy. The second "Someone" is tighter and more established, but acknowledges the band's own steps towards lyrical resolution and song awareness in their early years. The last track "When I'm Burning Matches" is the most revealing moment of rehearsal chaos and includes spontaneous shouts from Kathrin Voss to stop and restart. These track blemishes didn't get erased but instead, show the band would keep a moment's hiccup into the character of their song, bending a serious topic into something cathartic and playful.

True to its roots, the Demos '96 EP is very powerful in its truthfulness. Rather than polish away the mistakes, Klarstein.rocks owns them, offering listeners something raw but, in a way, also timeless, as it captures those features of youth, experimentation, and a certain beauty in beginnings. For listeners who enjoy R.E.M., Oasis or early Radiohead, the EP serves as a nostalgic reminder that imperfection can also be a kind of perfection.
