ColourTelly’s “Breathe”: An Echoing Call for Peace in a Troubled World
London-based duo ColourTelly are back with “Breathe”, a visceral and emotive single that holds up the disquiet of our times to astonishing effect. Comprised of the impassioned vocals of Evangeline Cunningham and experimental sonic noisescapes of Ollie Chubb, along with the luscious saxophone playing of Joe Elliott, ColourTelly blends narrative and emotive storytelling with lush sonic landscapes.
Drawing influence from trip-hop forefathers like Portishead, “Breathe” moves with almost cinematic weight, its moody layers and slow-burning rhythm hugging the tension of a tumultuous world. Lyrically, it doesn't shy away from the breeds of corruption and social unrest and the often devastating ramifications of political injustice, but instead captures the gut-level honesty of Prince's "Sign of the Times."
What makes "Breathe" so good is that it can exist on both levels: a personal narration of one's own inability to find peace in the chaos, but also a commentary on humanity's own inability to find peace in chaos. The song encourages listeners not to retreat but to remember the importance of speaking truth, if only in the darkest of climates.
"Breathe," the first single from ColourTelly's forthcoming album It's All Mad Out Here, which is set to be released on October 2, 2025, was recorded in their studio in Penge, South London. If "Breathe" is any indication, we're in for an album that will be not only intriguing but also sonically interesting.
