"Through the Quadrangle” by Marc Soucy: A global tapestry involving music

Marc Soucy's “Through the Quadrangle” serves as an ambitious and fitting capstone to Soucy's year-long STIR music series. From Boston, the track, as the final of a 13-part exploration, is elaborately adorned, multi-textured, and inter- or trans-national across genres and boundaries. At over 10 minutes in length, as a full composition, the track is more than simply a conclusion; it works as a musical pilgrimage across time and space.

"Through the Quadrangle" relates creativity and participates in the interconnectedness of global musical traditions beginning with the intricate rhythms of India and Central Asia, weaving through the art of the Balkans and the Middle East, movements in and blended with musical traditions across North Africa, the Iberian peninsula, Latin America, and even into the American Southwest. Each movement, each segment in Soucy's articulation, is skillfully performed via Soucy's keyboard-driven production, providing the listener a clarified but varied listening process.

Soucy primarily played every part, and while revealing technical mastery, he showed a respect for the engaging cultural lives he explores. As Soucy moves from region to region and element to element in his explorations through the quadrangle sonically, the sense of movement is fluid, aided by the shared emotional language, dance, and rhythm across civilizational boundaries.

As a final element of STIR, “Through The Quadrangle” is intellectually provocative and emotionally potent. It is a representation of the capacity of musical expression to move across cultures, and it’s an excellent conclusion to a series all about connection.
