KILRAVOCK Confronts Modern Work Culture With Daring New EP “Tyranny of the Clock”

Omaha-based artist KILRAVOCK (Steven Wayne Smith) provides a pointed and resonant critique of capitalist labor structures in his abrasive, new EP “Tyranny of the Clock.” The six tracks explore antiwork, labor rights, and neurodivergent experiences at work in a muddy haze of post-punk, sludge metal, and industrial rock.

The title track, “Who Killed Saint Monday,” is a highlight and a driving, anarchic response to George Woodcock’s essay the “Tyranny of the Clock.” With snarling guitars and punk energy, KILRAVOCK pulls you into an EP that refuses to fit anywhere. “Solidarity Forever” reimagines the classic labor anthem as a mournful dirge for lost union power with guest vocals that most hauntingly exemplify the emotional core of the song.

The remixes of "Incompatibility" and a raw version of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" demonstrate Smith's outstanding production flexibility and creativity. Two tracks are experimental pieces, from Smith's other projects, THE ALLITERATES and LUCID FUGUE, that help to round out the EP with depth and texture to this politically-charged music.

Tyranny of the Clock is an explosive and genre-bending protest soundtrack that does not just talk it roars.
