“Intertwined b/w Intertwined (acoustic)” by Delta of Venus: Two songs connected by empathy
For their second single, “Intertwined”, Washington, D.C.-based band Delta of Venus takes on the task of stretching the boundaries of genre while bringing emotional depth back to shoegaze music. The first single “Disengaged b/w Slipping” was a heralded success, and their new release “Intertwined” follows in the footsteps, covering the sonic distance between both the expanse of sound and the stripped-down intimacy that characterizes their emerging sound.
“Intertwined” is the main track and is a textural meditative exploration of chaos, compassion, and human connection, even between strangers. Riding a wave of swirling guitars, layers of ambience, and plaintive vocals, these elements combine to transport the listener into a world that is both hazy and sincere. It is shoegaze at its finest, emotive (indeed heartfelt), immersive, and atmospheric.
What makes this single release special is that it includes an acoustic version of “Intertwined.” What began as a joke last summer in a rehearsal space became surprisingly revealing. By reinterpreting the song acoustically, guitarist Ellery Twining was able to take a breath from employing so much distortion and showcase its lyrical heart. The acoustic version feels raw, visceral, and intimate, all while culminating the experience as if it were recorded in the quiet eye of a storm, in a brief moment of clarity.
With “Intertwined b/w Intertwined (acoustic), Delta of Venus creates an emotive sonic duality that drives home that their shoegaze experiment is not formulaic in any manner. It’s an intentional, emotive evolution that can be listened to multiple times.
